Names of 135 Trapped Pak Troops Released
News:
As many as 135 persons including 124 army soldiers and 11 civilians of 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion came under a huge snow slide early this morning in Gayari sector near Skardu, ISPR said. A military statement said the avalanche struck early on Saturday morning, raising the possibility that soldiers were asleep at the time.Snow slide is covering an area of 1 sq kilometer. This battalion headquarter is situated at same place for last 20 years and no incident of this nature has happened.Immediately after the incident Rescue efforts were kick started. Troops with sniffing dogs, aided by helicopters, were frantically trying to find signs of life in the snow after the avalanche engulfed the remote camp in mountainous Gayari, Siachen.Heavy Engineers machinery have been moved from Rawalpindi by air.
A team of doctors and paramedics has also been rushed to the high-altitude region, which suffers extreme weather conditions - temperatures on the strategic Siachen glacier plummet to minus 70 degrees Celsius (minus 94F)earlier, the army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said: "The rescue mission is continuing and rescuers are trying to rescue the soldiers."It is pertinent to mention here that, harsh weather and the high altitude claims many more lives than actual fighting over Siachen.
